The Virginia Constitution of 1869 created the office of Treasurer. The Treasurer and the Commissioner of Revenue are elected and serve for 4 years.

The Commissioner of the Revenue is the chief tax assessing officer of the local government.

The Treasurer is responsible for all revenue that comes to Lexington, including Personal Property and Real Estate taxes, Business License Fees, Estimated State Income Tax Payments, Water Bills and fees for City vehicle decals and dog licenses. The Treasurer is also responsible for managing the investment of local funds and maintaining local finance records.
