TREE BOARD

The Lexington Tree Board was created by the City Tree Ordinance adopted in 2000.  The Board advises City Council, the Planning Department, and the City Arborist.

Duties of the Lexington Tree Board include:

  • Reviewing notifications for activities that affect trees within the Central Business District.  (A City ordinance does regulate the planting or removal of trees in the Central Business District.)
  • Conducting community outreach and education programs.
  • Assisting with the development, revision and evaluation of the Comprehensive Tree Management Plan.
  • Seeking funding from state, federal and other granting agencies.
  • Evaluating yearly progress made toward the goals of the City Tree Ordinance.

Meetings of the Tree Board are held quarterly at City Hall.

City staff support for the Tree Board includes the City Arborist Betty Besal whose telephone number is (540) 462-6307.  The City's Arborist will make house calls to give tree and landscaping advice.
